Created by Hollow Ponds and Richard Hogg, the developers behind such games as Hohokum and Wilmont’s Warehouse, I Am Dead will put players in the role of Morris Lupton, a former museum curator and fresh ghost, who discovers that a volcanic eruption is about to destroy his tiny home island of Shelmerston. Accompanied by his also-deceased dog Sparky, Morris has to somehow find a way to prevent the disaster from happening.

Despite the high stakes, this looks to be one of the more laidback games about death, featuring a colorful world and a cast of characters to interact with. As for I Am Dead’s gameplay, that revolves around Morris’ ability to see the inside of objects with a sort of x-ray vision, which players will use to uncover the secrets of Shelmerston, as well as find the other ghosts inhabiting the island.

Annapurna has been on a roll with the indie titles it has published in the last few years, having turned out hits like Outer Wilds, Sayonara Wild Hearts, and What Remains of Edith Finch, as well as launching ports of classic indies like The Unfinished Swan. All things considered, this consistency with the games it chooses to publish is a good sign for I Am Dead.

I Am Dead will be released on October 8 for PC and Switch.
