Koei Tecmo Registered User Data Stolen in Hack

In a press release, which Koei Tecmo published on December 25th, the Japanese games publisher issued a notice that hackers had stolen website user data. The press release states:

The press release continues, saying that Koei Tecmo stores no personal financial information on the forum page, so things like credit card data have not been put at risk at this point in time.

This follows a long line of recent data breaches, which have included the Capcom hack and the discovery of Steam security vulnerabilities.

Who Is Responsible for the Koei Tecmo Hack?

Up to the point of the press release being published, Koei Tecmo is not aware of who carried out the hack.

In the press release, it says:

It is likely that those responsible for the hack will either come forward and claim the bragging rights, or the ongoing investigation will uncover them.

What Is Koei Tecmo Doing About the Attack?

Currently, the Japanese publisher is working alongside the relevant authorities to locate the source of the attack and investigate who is responsible.

In order to ensure no further security breaches take place, Koei Tecmo has closed its English-language website down for the foreseeable future.

Other than that, there is little it can do. It has an investigation underway with the appropriate law enforcement. Until it receives the results of those investigations, it is unlikely that Koei Tecmo will reinstate the website, or the forum, anytime soon.

Are You Registered on the Koei Tecmo Forum?

If you are, then there is a possibility that hackers have compromised your registration data. Providing you use a password manager and don’t use the same password for every login, you should be OK.

However, if you have a registration with the Koei Tecmo forum, and you do use the same password across different websites, then you should change them all. Make each one unique and store it in a password manager to save you from having to remember them in future.
